Most photographers tell you to show up at golden hour and smile. Here’s what they don’t mention: West Palm Beach’s humidity will turn your hair into a frizz ball by minute fifteen, the afternoon thunderstorms between May and October have a 50% chance of ruining your session, and half the prettiest spots require permits that cost more than you’d expect. After three decades shooting families in South Florida, I’ve learned which locations deliver the shots and which ones just look good on Google Maps.
The difference between a mediocre maternity session and one that makes you cry when you see the prints comes down to three things: light quality, background variety, and how comfortable you feel in the space. West Palm Beach gives you all three if you know where to look.
Mounts Botanical Garden (559 N Military Trail) is the spot most photographers don’t tell you about because they want to keep it to themselves. Fourteen acres of themed gardens means you’re not stuck with one look. The butterfly garden gives you color pops behind you. The palm allee creates natural leading lines that make your bump the focal point. The Japanese garden adds that soft, romantic feel without looking like every other beach maternity shoot in South Florida.
You don’t need a photography permit for professional shoots as long as you’re not bringing tripods over six feet or setting up elaborate props. That can save you $50 to $100.
Okeeheelee Park (7715 Forest Hill Boulevard) is 1,400 acres of bamboo groves, lakes, and boardwalks. The bamboo forest alone is worth the drive: textured backdrops that photograph completely different from standard palm-tree shots. The fishing pier gives you water reflections without beach crowds.
Important permit details: Palm Beach County Parks requires a photography permit for professional sessions, costing $50 to $100 depending on your setup. You must apply online ahead of time. Tripods are allowed. Flash near wildlife areas is prohibited and can result in fines up to $500.
Golden hour is not a suggestion in South Florida — it’s the only time that makes sense unless you want harsh shadows and squinting. That’s roughly one hour after sunrise (around 7 AM) or one hour before sunset (around 7 PM) year-round. The light wraps around your curves instead of flattening them, and skin tones look warm instead of washed out.
I’ve shot maternity sessions at noon exactly twice in 35 years; both clients wished they’d booked earlier when they saw the photos.
Peanut Island is a beach location that doesn’t feel like every other South Florida beach shoot. Ferries depart from 6506 N Flagler Drive in Riviera Beach; roundtrip fares run $12 to $18. The ferry operates 11 AM to 5 PM on weekends. The island is open sunrise to sunset.
Pack light — you’ll carry everything onto the ferry. Avoid midday sessions in summer (June–September); stick to early morning or late afternoon.
Lake Worth Beach is ten minutes from West Palm Beach proper. The public beach at Lake Avenue is free and open 24/7. Parking lots charge $2 per hour.
West Palm Beach Waterfront along Flagler Drive provides an urban-beach hybrid look: lawns, sculptures, yacht masts, and Intracoastal views.
The amphitheater steps create great leading lines, and sailboat masts add height without overwhelming the subject. This location works year-round since nearby buildings help diffuse direct sun. Early morning gives soft light bouncing off the water; late afternoon gives golden glow with city lights starting to come on.
Note: SunFest happens here every May (May 2–4, 2026). Sections may be closed — check the event calendar at sunfest.com before you book.

Preparation tips:
The difference between a session that feels like work and one that feels like a celebration comes down to preparation and the right location. West Palm Beach offers options from lush botanical gardens to secluded island beaches. Pick the backdrop that feels like you, book during the dry season if possible, and trust your photographer to handle the light.
