I learned this trade with my hands in chemicals, under a red safelight, printing other photographers’ negatives until I understood what a good one looked like. Everything since has been the same job with better tools.

I Was a Photographer’s Assistant and Fell in Love with the Field
Weddings in catering halls on Ocean Parkway. I loaded film, held the flash, and watched how a room full of relatives behaves at 11pm.
I Was a Color Printer at Sunshine and a Black and White Printer at Blitz Photography Studios
13th Avenue in Brooklyn, then BLITZ in Manhattan. Some pictures in my portfolio are old enough to actually be prints made from negative film.
Thousands of prints, a red grease pencil, and a darkroom education you can’t buy anymore.
The industry changed. The fundamentals didn’t.
The negative labs faded, digital took over, and I went with it. Posing, lighting, and knowing when to press the button work exactly the same. I just stopped waiting an hour to find out whether I got it.
