US visa photos and the photos USCIS asks for with a green card or work permit application use the same 2 by 2 inch format as a US passport photo, with a few rules of their own. Other countries set their own sizes. The requirements below come from the State Department, USCIS and the Canadian and UK governments, so you can arrive with the right one in mind.

Visa and green card photos are by appointment only. Call 954-986-4455 to book. Babies and children are welcome, and US passport photos are on their own page.

US visa photo requirements

The US Department of State’s rules for visa photos and digital images. The embassy or consulate where you apply makes the final call on whether a photo is accepted.

  • Size

Printed photos are 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The head measures 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, which is 50% to 69% of the image height.

  • Recent and in color

In color, and taken within the last 6 months so it shows how you look now.

  • Background

A plain white or off-white background, with a full-face view directly facing the camera.

  • Expression and clothing

A neutral expression with both eyes open, in the clothes you normally wear. No uniforms, except religious clothing worn daily.

  • Glasses and devices

Eyeglasses come off, except in rare medical cases with a signed medical statement. No headphones or wireless devices. A hearing device you normally wear can stay.

  • Head coverings

No hat or covering that hides the hair or hairline, unless it is worn daily for a religious purpose. The full face must show, with no shadows from the covering.

  • Immigrant visa interviews

Applicants who file Form DS-260, and Diversity Visa selectees, bring two identical photos to the interview, printed on photo quality paper at 2 x 2 inches.

  • Digital image for the DS-160

Nonimmigrant applicants upload a digital image with the DS-160. It must be a square JPEG, 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels, in color, and 240 kB or smaller.

  • Babies and toddlers

No one else can be in the photo, and the child should be looking at the camera with eyes open.

Green card and USCIS photo requirements

What USCIS asks for in the instructions for Form I-485 (the green card application) and Form I-765 (the work permit). Other USCIS forms list their own photo rules in their instructions.

  • Two identical photos

Two identical color passport-style photos of you, taken recently.

  • Size and view

2 by 2 inches, full face, frontal view. The head measures 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, and the eyes sit 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the photo.

  • Background and paper

A white to off-white background, printed on thin paper with a glossy finish, unmounted and unretouched.

  • Head bare

Your head must be bare unless you wear headwear required by your religious denomination.

  • Name on the back

Lightly print your name and A-Number, if you have one, on the back of each photo in pencil or felt pen.

Passport photos for other countries

Other countries use their own sizes. Two that come up often in South Florida are below. For any other country, bring the size from the consulate or the application form when you come in.

  • Canadian passport

Two identical photos, 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 x 2 3/4 inches), with the face 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown. Taken by a commercial photographer or studio within 6 months of applying, unaltered, on a plain white or light background.

  • The back of a Canadian photo

The photographer writes or stamps the date the photo was taken and the studio’s name and full address on the back of one photo. Your guarantor signs that photo too, unless you are renewing an adult passport.

  • UK passport, paper form

Two identical printed photos, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with the head 29 to 34 mm from crown to chin, on a plain cream or light grey background, taken in the last month. Online applications use a digital photo instead.

  • Any other country

Bring the official size and background rules for your passport or visa, from the consulate’s website or the form itself, and the photo is taken to match.
